Super Mario 3D World - Combining the base gameplay of Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS with design inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, and throwing in four-player semi-competitive gameplay, this is a sure fire hit for Nintendo. (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, PC) I am still blown away by the quality of the toys, too I got to take a few of them home, and they would look just at home on a shelf as they would in a child's toy collection, or sitting next to your game console. In a major coup for Disney, they managed to convince Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to agree to let their consoles share data between them, so you will be able to make a level on a PlayStation 4 and your friend will be able to download it and play it on her Xbox 360. The big news to come out of my E3 demo this year is that all platforms that allow players to make their own levels and share them online can share across platforms. (Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC)ĭisney Infinity - This combination of physical toys and virtual playgrounds gets better every time I see it. It is also packed with jokes making fun of popular shooters - even the title is a pun on "modern warfare". AI controlled plants can also be planted in pots around the battlefield, thereby acting as drone turrets, either defending, blocking, or healing allies. They can freely run and gun, or plant themselves in a pot to increase their power, thereby sacrificing mobility. The pea shooter, sunflower, cactus, and chomper, very familiar to those who have played the original, have become assault, medic, sniper, and stealth/heavy classes respectively. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare - This could so easily have been a lazy spin-off from a popular series, designed to part players from their money with a minimum of fuss, but instead PopCap has put together something that combines the charm and humour of their original 2D tower defence title with deep, strategic squad-management mechanics in something resembling a third person shooter crossed with tower defence. (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PC) Assassin's Creed III was a disappointment, but this looks set to redeem the series. Also for the first time, the different segments of the game are not cut off from each other: chasing an assassination target can flow from land to sea or vice versa, incorporating swordplay, a mad chase through the jungle, a naval pursuit through a hurricane, ship-to-ship cannon fire, and finally boarding and a massive sword battle between the two crews, all unscripted and spontaneous, and without a single cutscenes or loading screen. (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PC)Īssassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Assassin's Creed blasts into the future and returns to its roots in one fell swoop, giving us a seamless open world for the first time in the series (and a huge 16km x 16km map) while also backing away from the heavily scripted gameplay of recent sequels and reverting to the first game's simple and open mission structure. It also looks amazing on next-generation consoles, but is still coming to the current generation. There is so much to love here: a huge virtual Chicago with no loading screens, a free-flowing open world full of life and intrigue, and choose-your-own-path gameplay that allows players to tackle problems in their own way. While last year it was unclear exactly how this intriguing title would work in practical terms, this year Ubisoft gave us strong demonstrations of the ways in which the hacking tools would be integrated smoothly into gameplay. Watch_Dogs - Yes, this one gets a "best of E3" nod two years running. Noire, you check out evidence by touching it and having flashbacks to past events, and you "interview" witnesses by stepping inside their heads and reliving their memories. While the goals are the same as in a detective game like L.A. The twist is that the murder is your own: you're dead, seeing the world from the "Dusk", a ghostly dimension populated by the souls of the dead who cannot move on because of unfinished business. It is a detective game at heart, in which you must collect clues, find witnesses, and piece together the events that led to a murder. Murdered: Soul Suspect - In the bustle of E3, games fall into the cracks, and sadly this one was forgotten in my day three write-up on Friday.
